JOHOR PORT BERHAD AND JOHOR PORT UNION SIGN LANDMARK COLLECTIVE AGREEMENT, USHERING IN A NEW ERA OF COLLABORATION

PUTRAJAYA, 4 March 2025 – Johor Port Berhad (Johor Port), a member of MMC Group, and the Johor Port Union (JPU) marked a significant milestone with the signing of a new Collective Agreement (CA). The signing ceremony, held at DoubleTree by Hilton Putrajaya on 24 February 2025, was attended by key representatives from both organisations and witnessed by distinguished guests.
This landmark Agreement, the seventh (7th) CA since the establishment of the JPU in 1998, is the result of constructive and collaborative negotiations between Johor Port and JPU. It establishes the Terms and Conditions of employment for unionised employees at Johor Port for the next five (5) years, from 2025 to 2029. This Agreement reflects the shared commitment of both parties to fostering a harmonious, positive and productive work environment, while supporting Johor Port’s continued growth as a leading regional port.
The Agreement was signed on behalf of Johor Port Berhad by YBhg Tan Sri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh, Chairman of Johor Port Berhad; Md Derick Basir, Chief Executive Officer of Johor Port Berhad; and Hermee Tahir, Head of Human Resource Division of Johor Port Berhad while the Johor Port Union was represented by signatories, Hj Suratmin Alwee, Union President; Izzham Shafiq Hashim, Union Vice President; and Afzan Amly Ahmad Taha@Idris, Union Secretary. The signing ceremony was witnessed by Khalid Jali, Director-General of the Department of Industrial Relations and YBhg Datuk Mohamed Shafie BP Mammal, President of the Malaysian International Labour Network Council (UNIMLC).
Md Derick Basir, Chief Executive Officer of Johor Port Berhad highlighted the significance of the CA, which emphasises the values of mutual respect, collaboration, and their positive impact on port operations and employee well-being. “This Collective Agreement, our seventh with the JPU, reaffirms our unwavering commitment to our employees, who are the backbone of Johor Port. It reflects our belief in open communication and collaborative problem-solving, laying a strong foundation for shared success over the next five years.”
JPU President, Hj Suratmin Alwee stated, “This seventh agreement represents a significant achievement for our members, securing enhanced benefits and improved working conditions for the next five years. We appreciate the constructive approach taken by Johor Port Berhad throughout the negotiation process, which demonstrate their respect for our members and their commitment to fostering a fair and equitable workplace.”
The new Collective Agreement improves on the emolument and benefits package whilst enhancing other existing terms and condition of employment. It is designed to bolster competitiveness within the industry, inducing employee satisfaction and promote harmonious industrial relations in Johor Port.
The signing of this Collective Agreement marks a new chapter in the ongoing strong relationship between Johor Port and Johor Port Union, reinforcing their shared vision for the sustainable development of Johor Port and the well-being of its employees.
